Earth Office

Built in 2002, inside an agricultural barn, the walls are of rammed earth excavated from the site. The floor is raised off the ground, supported by an arched crypt like space. The walls are built directly off the sub-soil. No concrete has been used in the building. The earth walls are insulated with Warmcel on the outside on 3 sides to maximize the benefits of thermal mass, and on the inside where the wall is seen within the barn, in order to express the material from the outside. The earth is exposed internally and Self-coloured clay plaster forms the internal finish on internal dividing walls. Sliding doors open onto a railway sleeper bridge/deck.
